Valentine's Day 2013

Ah, Love Day.

There's a lot of love going around this house.  We each had a little mailbox filled with Valentines Goodies and hearts with little love messages on them.  Besides the ones from Mark & I to each other (our eyes only world, sorry), my favorites went as follows:

"Dad,
This heart is for you.
Love,
Mac"

"Belle,
I love your curls.
Love,
Dad"

"Belle,
I love it when you hug me and say, "Hmmmmm."
Love,
Mom"

"Mac,
I love going to Angel's games with you.
Love,
Dad"

"Mac,
I love it when you read me stories.
Love,
Mom"

"Sis,
You are so cute.
Love,
Mac"

"Dad,
I like it when you give me cereal.
Love,
Belle"

"Mac,
I love to play in the balls with you.
Love,
Belle"

"Mom,
This heart is for you.
Love,
Mac"

"Dad,
I love it when you play nintendo with me.
Love,
Mac"

"Mac,
I love it when you remind me to say prayers.
Love,
Mom"

"Sis,
I love to wrestle you.
Love,
Mac"

"Mac,
I love your big pecs.
Love,
Dad"

"Belle,
I love how you point to everything.
Love,
Mom"

"Mom,
I love you.  You are so cute.
Love,
Mac"

//Our morning of love only got better.  We then went to school, where we celebrated to our heart's content.

The night concluded with an attempt at Lucille's BBQ (Mark's fav) and it was kinda pathetic.  But it included the arrival of some visitors.  Which will require a new post.

All in all, a magical day.  A favorite among holidays.

Macky Mac, 3 1/2 Years

Oh my little stud muffin.

This little man is so much fun.

He loves friends.  He's quite comfortable around his favorites and (most of the time) shares great with all of them.  And lately, he's started playing more with random kids at the park.  I love it.

He has come so far in school in the few short weeks we've been going (when we can).  He's answering questions, raising his hand, sitting criss-cross applesauce, and doesn't even ask to come sit by me any more. We walk in, he plops on the the carpet, listens and responds great for an entire half hour, and then eagerly brings a project back to work on with me.  I love it.

The only thing we need to work on:  being the center of attention.  This poor boy bites his lip and freezes stone still.  The other day the class was taking turns pretend jump-roping.  Each child went to the front and jumped up and down while Miss Claudia and a parent swung a pretend rope.  Everyone loved it.  Except Mac.  His turn came, he tiptoed to the front, and then just stood there, looking down.  "Jump, Mac, jump!"  everyone said, but he would not move.  After a few seconds, they let him off the hook.  He walked back me, head down, and said, "Mom, can we just do the numbers now?"

Besides numbers, he still loves Avengers.  I love them too ... they're eeking out some pretending from his little mind!  It gets me giddy every time.  Besides being "Mac Trout" or "Macky Pujols", he will now be "Mac America".

Yesterday, I took him to the park.  And do you know what he did for the first time ever??  He grabbed those giant play steering wheels and drove us somewhere!  It was to Zack and  Ashlee's house, and with my additions, we out-drove Lightning McQueen, outran a grumpy Incredible Hulk, nearly got swiped by a low-flying airplane, and slowed down to pick up Belen.

MacAlister always had a real love for bikes.

That love has lately increased.  So much so, that Dad just couldn't take it any more and bought him a new big boy bike.

He loves it.

Thinking, of course, that my son is a genius, I took him on a little trail near our house with some friends.  This trail happens to have a few small hills.  With ditches in several places.  He would be fine, right?  Sigh.  Turns out we don't quite have the breaks down yet.  That boy went careening down the first little hill we came to and toppled head-over-heels into a ditch.  He attempted riding one more time, but a random sharp turn sent him sprawling again, and after that he decided he would much rather walk his bike.

It has taken some doing to convince him to get back on.

Enter: Grandma.  Turns out, all we needed was someone to impress.

We are back in the saddle, baby.

I love love love this boy.  He is smart.  He is sweet.  He is polite.  He is fun, he loves people (still getting used to kids his own age ... they often are more of a threat than a friend) and he loves animals.  He loves getting "big pecs" -- our latest ploy to get him to eat -- and flipping coins for prayers and bites of food.  He loves being told Jesus stories and has lately renewed some serious interest in books.  He loves Wii games, Wild Kratts and anything on PBS, and lately prefers Imagination Movers of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  He is obsessed with the movie "Brave" and is currently saving up monies for a hard-core bow and arrow just like Merida's.

And most recently, he loves loves loves "Peter Pan".  We are all hooked on it.

I love this boy, I feel like he is everything a little boy should be.  Snakes, snails, puppy dog tails ... with a twist of sugar.

Belly Baby, Nearly 15 Months

Look at this little ray of sunshine.
Please note the slap-on bracelets.
Miss Belen has evolved into the biggest sweetheart you will ever see.

She doesn't say much, in fact her word count has sat securely at four for quite some time now.  She says, "Mom", "Dad", "Go", and "Poop". (Early potty training??  We can only hope.)

Don't let that fool you into thinking she doesn't get her needs met ... monkey-style grunting, pointing, and the occasional disgruntled squawk seem to be good enough communication tools for her.  I think I need to start talking with her a bit more.

Maybe she'll be an Einstein and not speak till she's 4 ... but, she's only 14 months now, so she's got plenty of time.

Her favorite songs include: "Teddy Bear Teddy Bear" (with clapping), that Jake and the Neverland Pirates Song.  You know, the one that goes like this:

"First we go, go, go
where the cannon balls roll
at Cannon Ball Canyon.
Then we twist, twist, twist
and we turn like this
at Twisty Turn Tunnel.
Then we clap, clap, clap
'cause we know where we're at
at Butterfly Bluff!"

We do all sorts of actions and she says "Go, go, go" over and over again.
Of course I can't forget, "Popcorn Popping", "Happy Family", and the "Uh-Uh-Uh Song" (or actually "Generator" by Freelance Whales).

Her favorite food is definitely cereal.  I've got to get those cereal boxes off of the top of the fridge.  All day every day she grunts and reaches for them.  I've either got to clean out some cupboards ... or get a new house.

She will still eat just about everything else ... but definitely fruit and crackers are her preferred foods.  And she's getting smarter; starting to turn her nose up at a few things in hopes for something better.  Little stinker.

She loves to hold hands, and lately has been reaching out to Mac a lot.  She's helping him be a gentleman.  Just tonight they walked all through the mall hand in hand.  Yes, it was heart-melting.

She loves stuffed animals.  Every time we go to the store she finds the biggest one she can, gives it a hug and a kiss, and proceeds to drag it around as quickly and quietly as she can.  I've felt the pressure to buy these things purely because of the dust they pick up from being drug around ... oops.  At home, her favorite is definitely Watson the Raccoon ... he has a story about him and responds to some of the lines we read.  She could gaze into his beady little eyes for hours.

She also loves dolls.  Necklaces are still a favorite.  Hair bows, she brings to me and then bows so I can get them on her.  She wears any shoe she can get her hands on, and is already better at putting them on her own feet than Mac is.  She loves books, balloons, puppies, lotion, toothbrushes, cars, and really anything Mom or Mac are doing.

She does not, however, enjoy getting clothes put on one bit.  Perhaps it has something to do with her lovely little noggin?  Maybe.  She also does not like going to bed.  I have discovered a magic blanket that has helped things considerably, but she would most definitely rather be up late playing with anyone or anything.

She typically does not like to be wrestled, but Dad is warming her up to the idea and she seems to handle things a bit better with Mac than she has in the past.

And although she is already as good at sharing as Mac ever has been, don't you rip things out of her hands.  You will get the angriest, most ear-splitting shriek ever.  After you think you've recovered, she'll let two more short ones fly.  And if the toy hasn't been returned, the tears commence.

All in all, I love this age.  It's fun, it's sweet, and never a dull moment.

Snowbird Guests

I believe that January must be a terrible time to be in Utah.  My memory is getting fuzzed out by all the sunshine here, but I do remember hating the snow once Christmas had passed.

It seems to be the thought of all our distant relatives.  We have had a guest every weekend throughout the month of January.

It is a non-stop party.

Koch Family
It started with a five-day visit from Mark's sister Rachelle and her fabulous family.  It was their first time visiting us, and we got to witness their first trip to Disneyland.  Memories of note include:

  • Apparently, if you have four boys and no sentimental ties to Disneyland, California Adventure is way better.  (What?!)
  • Boys boys boys boys boys!  Mac was in heaven with all the nerf gun fights, light saber fights, sports, and wrestling.
  • Belle and Gwen got some legit interaction in.  And turns out they're great at sharing necklaces.
  • One on one time with Rachelle.  I feel like I never get to talk to her, and it makes me sad.  She is the sweetest, most kind-hearted gal and I adore her.
  • The pukes.  Very memorable, very deadly.  Specifically to me, Belle, Curtis, and a couple of her boys.  But in reality, worth it.  If I have to have it coming out of both ends for 24 hours to get that Koch family to FINALLY visit us, I'll do it again and again.

Nana & Bumpa
Next came a brief visit from my parents.  Dad had a seminar in L.A. and brought Mom along.  Of note:

  •  They timed it perfectly; Mark and I had planned on going to Let's Make a Deal -- which, by the way, was "the worst day of his life" -- and Mom was able to be there to watch the kids all day.  Oh, how it made me want to live closer to them.
  • Target, Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ, and Ikea.  A day in heaven filled with spoiled kids and a spoiled me.
  • Fevers.  Mac and Mark developed the worst flu I have ever seen in any of them ever; knocked them both out cold for a solid day.  Guess Belle and I still had antibodies on high alert after our bout with stomach flu the week before; we escaped untouched.  It came at a busy time, but my mom was here to take care of everyone while I tried to be famous one day and then teach in church the next.
  • Watching "Brave" 8,236 times.
  • Mac teaching Nana how to play Mario.

Sister Weekend
Then came the aunties for their yearly trip to the Long Beach hair show.  I called my lovely sister a couple weeks before the big day and said, "Buy a ticket and fly down here so we can make it a sister's weekend!"  And she did.  Memories include:

  • A trip to watch a taping of "The Doctors".  Have you seen it?  It actually airs tomorrow, if you read this in time.  As drained as I was from trying to win something on "Let's Make a Deal" the week before, I'm glad I went.  We walked in and the producers said to our little group, "Are you guys twins?"  Nope, just sisters.  But they put us in the front behind all the guests of the show.  Turns out, the episode was all out multiples.
  • Downtown Disney, where we ate stuffed churros, caramel popcorn, and tried to pry Belle away from every stuffed animal/doll we came across.  She wanted to hug, kiss, and carry them all.
  • Newport Beach in the freezing cold wind ... but dang it, Jamie got to see the ocean!
  • "Did you know ..."  Everything reminded Jamie of some neat little fact she learned about Joseph Smith and her mission.  It is so amazing to hear those stories.  I'm trying to figure out a not-awkward way for Jamie to prepare a lesson for us all.
  • Updates.  On Lori's single life and all her lovely kids.  On Ceely and their possible future moves, and particularly on my lovely sister.  She's facing some biiiiiiiig decisions these days, and it was so fun to hash it all out with her face to face.  Oh I have missed her.
  • Having Shea tell me that eating my pickles made her feel she was right back in Nana's kitchen.  Oh. My. Goodness.  Ultimate compliment, right there.
  • Crazies.
  • Dented cars.
  • Tacos.
  • Make-up and Ross.

Benny & Katie
And Gwace and Eva ... oh how we love them.  This little family knows the magic of California well, and has made a point to visit regularly.  This time, they were here to enjoy Disneyland one last time ... before welcoming their third child into the world.  A son!  Noteworthy:

  • Katie looks just as good growing a man child as she does growing her lovelies -- don't listen to anything she says.
  • Eva sleeping under Mac's bed with the Christmas lights on all night.
  • Dead cat stories.  And really, any story told by Katie.
  • Some serious cousin love ... Mac has never cared about ANY girl as much as he cares about these two.  They play great together.  And of course, Belle adores them.  She shared necklaces.
  • Babysitting super heroes during my 30 hour labor.  Of my doula client.  Definitely learned a few things with that one, NEVER going that early again.  But thanks to my dear friend Lindy and Ben and Katie, my kids came out unscathed.  I came home to Mac laughing and Belle sporting the cutest hair-do ever.
  • Cold beaches, lost balls, and big fat burgers.
  • Old Cinderella is still alive; she lives at Huntington beach and knows how to tie balloon animals.
  • Ben fixing the hot tub single handedly.  Oh, and Mark brought a flashlight.
  • Passing out and sleeping for 12 hours straight.
  • Catching up with all their old friends in our ward on Sunday.  They make us feel cool.
  • Attempting to make up for my utter lack of hostess-ness by cooking up everything I had planned for the days before.

Well folks, it's been a wild and crazy start to our new year, and we are loving every minute of it.

We're also thinking we need a bigger house.

So let me lysol down our house, and then please, give me a call.  Come visit.

First Day of School

Our city does a free pre-preschool for 0-4 year olds.

A friend roped us in to coming, and we are hooked.

It's about a half hour of teacher-time, parents have to stay the whole time.  After the teacher has gone through a few activities with the kids sitting in the center of the room, they are sent back to their parents with some little project to do together.

I love that it's a drop-in program.
I love that I can see how he reacts to a school setting.
I love that I can see how I can better prepare him to be successful and happy in school.
I love that he has to interact with strangers.
I love that all sorts of different businesses volunteer time to this free program to make learning exciting for the kids.

And mostly, I love how excited these two are to head to Miss Claudia's school in the morning.

School Pic

Hee hee ... this little goober loves it too.  And I had to enroll her, so really it's school for her too!

New Year's 2013

This was the best New Year's Party.

It was at my home (kids can go down when I want), and Janae planned it.  Recipe for success.

We played Minute to Win It, and Mark and I dominated.
I assume.
I actually have no idea who won, but it was awesome.

These super friends played the night away, passing out ten minutes before midnight all together in our bed.

Seth, MacAlister, Bruin

And we rang in the new year in style.

It's going to be a big year ... big decisions to be made and big moments to be lived.

Starting with season passes ... where to?  As much as I squirmed for a Disneyland pass, it would've been $1500 for our family.

Knott's Berry Farm is $300.

We went the cheaper route this year, in anticipation of moving, buying a house, and possibly a practice sometime this year.

Big stuff, right?
Stay tuned and I'll tell you all about it.

Benefits of Impatience

It seems that Belle's favorite part of Utah was having seven full sets of fingers to grab and walk around the house with.

But unfortunately, my one set of fingers is not quite as satisfactory.  Can't be everywhere she needs me to be.  So upon our return, she squawked at me for a couple of days.

And then got impatient.

So, exasperated with me, she decided to get places herself.  She walked.

And walked.

And walked.

That was a month ago ... today she is attempting to run.
