Panguitch Balloon Rally

I almost hesitate to post this ...

It's just that the Balloon Rally is the best kept secret in the state of Utah, and I'd hate to be the one to kill it.

However, this event is too incredible to miss.

So people ... mark it in your calendars.  Panguitch, Utah holds a balloon festival every year during the last weekend on June.  The Gunn family makes it a tradition every year, and for the first time Mark and I were able to go.

My week of driving from California to, St. George,  on to Moab, and back to St. George ended with one last drive out to Panguitch.  Belen was devastated, but it was well worth it.

This was a game of "Keep Adam away from Sam" started by the older Gunn cousins.  Grandma joined in.

The younger cousins followed suit and started their own wrestling match.

(Sorry for the picture overload ... I promise I did try to slim down.  It's just painful to leave out these awesome pictures!)

The rest of the weekend was spent drinking chocolate milk, eating what Chris could "throw together" (delicious), cousin craziness, a homemade slip n' slide, and chatting the day away.  Adam and Sam slipped out for a movie alone, Rachelle organized our combined food prep efforts, Ashlee represented the ladies in a mountain bike ride with the boys, we laughed till we cried as we watched "Duck Dynasty", and a neighbor spotted the newlyweds Sarah and Adam barreling down the freeway to their honeymoon destination at breakneck speed.  So funny.

And finally, we spent Saturday evening out on the town, where all the ballooners set up their balloons, lighting main street brilliantly.

Mac was a bit scared of the torches, which really, isn't too hard to understand:

But honestly ... what an incredible weekend.  Well worth the drive.

So put it in your calendar ... I'll see you there next year.

Sarah & Adam Bishop, Married June 28, 2013

Ah!
Sarah's cousin Heidi took some incredible photos. The girl has skills.  See more here:

Sweet, sweet Sawah.  The baby of the Gunn family.  A crowning jewel, really.  That girl has got kindness, spirituality, humility, and happiness down to a T.  She has had her fair share of trials in her very few years, and they have only made her more beautiful ... inside and out.  I don't think there is a single person out there who could have anything bad to say about Miss Sarah Gunn.

I remember when I first met the Gunn family.  I was terrified.  You see, there were just so many of them, and most of them so much older and wiser than I was.  Used to being the oldest in my family, I felt quite inadequate. Luckily, Sarah bunked up with me for that trip, and that girl calmed my heart and made me feel at home.  She just ... has that way about her.  And then through the years she's let me doll her up and talk her ear off, and loved me in spite of it.  She is one dynamite gal ... and I've only known Sarah six years, so imagine what her siblings feel for her!  I can attest to the fact that they all adore her.  I don't think a single one of them escaped a little emotion at that wedding.

The day started bright and early.  At 6 a.m., Katie, Ashlee, and I combined forces to primp and polish this little Gunn girl.  We used to do that for her high school dances, so it was extra special to sit down in that little basement bathroom once more and send her up -- this time -- to the man that matters.  Sarah was just so content; I'm pretty sure we could have settled for clown makeup and a pony tail and she would've been happy.  "I just wanted to spend some time with my sisters-in-law, and make sure everything about this day was a family event," she said.

I love her.

We then rallied the troops (40 people in the immediate family ... including spouses and kiddos), and took some pictures.  My kids proved to be the worst of them all, ("I only smile to Mommy's camera!" sobs Mac) but hopefully they managed to get a couple of shots with everyone in the frame.

Heidi got the one photo Belen wasn't crying in.  She must be magic.

And indeed, both of them were more than satisfied to smile for my lame little phone.

If ever I couldn't find Belle that morning, I would just whistle for Molly the dog.  Belle was sure to follow.
Molly is a top notch babysitter.
We were then treated to a breakfast of champions with sausages, egg casseroles, a fruit bar, and a crepe bar in the gorgeous setting of the Gunn's back yard.  So good.  Of course.  Chris Gunn was in charge of it all, and Chris does not do anything halfway.

Please note Molly, Sarah's dog/appendage standing guard at her feet.
Each table was then in charge of a themed bag of gifts.  Grandpa Rand put together some hilarious little poems to go with each presentation, and Sarah's girl cousins added a song.  Then Rachelle got up and spoke about her sweet baby sister, choking me up a little.  Adam followed, representing the Gunn brothers with a hilarious poem ... that had Mark in tears!  It was the fourth time in the seven years I've known him that I've ever saw him cry.  He later said,
"It's just ... Sarah's a real sweetheart and she's been through a lot.  She deserves to be happy, and I think she will be."

The breakfast ended with them cutting the cake ... pancakes I mean!  Sarah isn't much of a cake fan (it's one of those no-sugar Gunn things, I suspect), and Adam adores pumpkin pancakes ... so there you have it!

Then came a little open mic morning ... Adam's family is quite musical; it was so fun to hear them all.  He comes from a solid, candid, fun-loving family as far as I can tell, and that boy will no doubt be a fantastic addition to this massive Gunn clan.  I am really happy they have each other.

After all their favorite songs were sung, we parted ways to prep for the temple.

The ceremony was a special one, particularly as Spencer Gunn's presence was strongly felt.  I know he was there watching his baby girl be sealed for time and all eternity to her sweetheart.

And finally, memorable exit ... they left the temple in 115 degree weather and a rainbow of umbrellas!

We sure love you, Sarah and Adam!  We are looking forward to being one big fat eternal family together.  Congratulations.

Thomas Family Reunion 2013

Every other year, my dad's immediate family and everyone who comes along with them gets together for a little vacation reunion.

This year, we hit up Moab, Utah.

My highlights include:

  • Driving and driving and driving.
  • Belle hollering "Help!" from the backseat for about two hours straight.
  • The sudden disappearance of my children into the arms of the jillion loved ones waiting for us.

  • Nana's cinnamon rolls.
  • The group of papas heading over to investigate a potentially creepy neighbor.
  • Sleepovers with Jamie. In the same bed.  We whispered the night away, just like old times!  Except with two babies on the floor next to us, and more ... mature ... topics.
  • Belle waking us up in the morning with a, "Mom!" which Jamie sat up to first.  I then followed.  "Mom?" Belle said again and stared back and forth at each of us, quite confused.
  • Dance party with my brothers' guitar skills and my sister's ukulele. Turns out Belen is a top-notch twirler.
  • Hearing my uncles hash it out.  Most of which are sarcastic, opinionated, and hilarious ... so it's guaranteed entertainment.  The weird part was realizing that most of us cousins are indeed old enough to try to join in. I don't have the guts ... but others do.

  • Discussing the evolution of man with Kolbers.  And watching him roll out the latest and greatest party video games.
  • Though I didn't go because of sleepy babies, the frightening family Oo-Aah Lake story was told yet again ... at the actual Oo-Aah Lake.  The horrors, the horrors!
  • Beanless tacos.  Oh those Thomas siblings.
  • River rafting with the kiddos!  I worried Mac would be too young ... but even he got bored.  Luckily we had the best guide of them all; he made sure we were in the lead the entire time so Mac could "win", kicked us all out of the raft for a good river swim, and dolled out and took plenty of jokes.  All good natured, of course.  Mac loved the rapids.  "Thems trying to get in our boat, silly water!  You stay out there, this is for us!"  He wished there were more.
  • Swimming in 100+ degrees.  California has made me extremely sensitive to extreme weather.

  • Seeing Arches National Park ... sort of.

A big thank you to the little family that made this all possible.  Even with a brand new baby.

  • Touring the house in the rock, which Belen attempted to tear down.  She and I spent a lot of time outside.
  • Jogging with about 10 cousins. I beat Gabe. He was in the lead.  And ... he's 8 years old.
  • Catching lizards & climbing red rocks with my siblings.  Plus Michael.  He's quiet the lizard whisperer.

  • Saying farewell to everyone ... knowing I would see them again in a couple of weeks for yet another drive.  But for Jamie's wedding!
The Patriarch himself, Jess McCallister Thomas.  We love you Bumpa!
And beautiful little Grandma Arlene ... you have made a world of difference to him.  Thank you for taking all us crazy Thomas' on.
